I'm not sure that you will get a 'final' answer as too much can depend on circumstances. The Linux kernel has been upgraded since any of those post (they go back to about 2006), so things change. I assume that you already have a fully working Linux Mint system that you are happy with? Can you let us know what version of Mint and rough specs for your system first please? I can't see any obvious issue with using that card - and if you install it unsucessfully then you should be able to just remove it. No you can't use the ATI drivers on current version of Mint or most linuxes for that matter.

The reason is simple - ati dropped support for this card and there is new kernels and xservers and all that that are not supported by those drivers. So if oyu try to install them it can ruin your system. In short - you are stuck with opensource drivers that community made. If you are experiencing difficulties however, there is an option to install a newer version of these opensource drivers. Instructions for install, drivers and how to remove them (if they do not work) can be found here: Please read through it before installing as they are still beta version. I believe they iwll be included in next Ubuntu (goes out in April) and very likely also in next edition of Mint.
